THE ISLAMIC UNDERTAKER'S PROFILE

It was a heart-rending experienced over an RMAF Nuri M23-17 helicopter crashed in Lundu river, Sarawak that took the life of 16 pax including 2 Generals and 6 Aircrews, dated 18 December, 1989 on a light drizzle misty morning. We were the first Search and Rescue Alouette III helicopter to spot the ill-fated Nuri helicopter semi-submerged in the low tide of Lundu river. Then the search party arrived having being radioed back to RMAF Base Kuching.  It was a tragic moment to be on the crash site, helping to bring the dead body bags back to the base, then to the hospital for post-mortem and finally returned to the 'Base Surau' for the body wash, shrouding and the prayers which lasted till late night with bodies filled the coffins sealed and marked, thus awaiting for an airlift to their hometowns on the following day for military burials. I spent my night at the Base Surau and concurrently had a sleepless night perhaps with the fatal scenario spinning in my memory thinking friends of all friends that have died. The probability of the post-obit of my involvement during the search and rescue had coincidently enticed and overturned me to become "The Islamic Undertaker" after my retirement from the air force in 1992.....May God bless them.

Back from Mecca in 1995

In the year 2000 marked my first apprenticeship as a 'funeral undertaker' within my community came into existence. I was placed under the care my 'Master Undertakers' the late Haji Aziz Bin Ahmad and Haji Ariffin Bin Lazim for several years and soon became a sole successor after their death, Al-Fatihah. I am now on my own momentum to gain experience and knowledge, and known having to train the younger generation in "Islamic Funeral Undertaking" that becomes one of my prime task. Besides, I too has to acquire as much Islamic funeral knowledge as to enhance my capability on the subject. My respects goes to the two Islamic religious teachers and funeral advisors, the late Tuan Guru Ustaz Haji Yasin Bin Hassan of Merbok and also the present Tuan Guru Ustaz Haji Ahmad Ziyadi Bin Hassan, late Haji Aziz Bin Ahmad and Haji Ariffin Bin Lazim for their solid foundation given to me on the Islamic Funeral information and Management and not forgetting, The Malaysian Islamic Training Institute(ILIM) and The Islamic Center of Northern University Malaysia(UUM) for their superb course in deliverance on the Islamic funeral subjects.

PROSEDUR BARU PERMIT MENGUBUR

KENYATAAN MEDIA
DATO` JARIAH MOHD SAID
KETUA PENGARAH
JABATAN PENDAFTARAN NEGARA

PROSEDUR BARU DAFTAR KEMATIAN / PERMIT
MENGUBUR BAGI SEMENANJUNG MALAYSIA
29 NOVEMBER 2011 (SELASA)

1. Mulai 1 Disember 2011, Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) akan memperkenalkan inovasi baru bagi Dokumen Daftar Kematian / Permit Mengubur di Semenanjung Malaysia sepertimana yang telah diluluskan oleh Menteri Dalam Negeri di bawah Seksyen 39(h) Akta Pendaftaran Kelahiran dan Kematian 1957 (Akta 299).

Borang JPN. LM02 (Pin.1/11) yang di guna pakai
berkuatkuasa pada 1 Disember, 2011.

My Home Town Favorite Book Shop

Islamic knowledge has been early taught during the childhood years for every Moslem in Malaysia. Books or 'Kitab' on Islamic religion are the prime choice of Moslem readers and it flourishes in every book shop. Most books are in Bahasa Malaysia as from translation from Arabic. Theres are five known categories of Islamic books available: 1)Bahasa Malaysia(Romanised), 2)Bahasa Malaysia(Modern Jawi), 3)Bahasa Melayu(Old Jawi version), 4)Full Arabic version, and 5)Hard to come by of the English version.

Center for the 'Old Kitab'

The bookshop named 'Pustaka Amin', established in 1961 by the late Tuan Imam Haji Yusoff Bin Ahmad(27.03.1927-16.01.2003), the former Imam of the Masjid Bakar Arang now renamed Masjid Abu Bakar As Siddiq, Sungai Petani, Kedah. The bookshop is sometime called 'Kedai Yusoff Kitab' by his friends and located at No.47 Bangunan PKNK.,Sungai Petani(closed to the Bus Station). He was my late father's friend and a brotherly friend of mine too.....Al-Fatihah.

The late Imam Haji Yusoff Bin Ahmad, the founder of Pustaka Amin bookshop.

Today the late Haji Yusoff's daughter, Cik Hamidah managing the bookshop.

Today it still been my favourite bookshop since my school days during the late Imam Haji Yusoff Bin Ahmad was alive and it is here where most of my 'Kitab' came from. It is also locally known as the longest surviving center for the 'Old Kitab' in Sungai Petani.

FUNERAL MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION - MOSQUE the house of ALLAH.

Sungai Petani is the second largest town after Alor Setar and has a population of about half a million. A town which considered fortunate to have 15 picturesque mosques often called 'The house of Allah', scattered within the radius of its own township boundary, merely a several kilometers apart of each other. Providing the Moslem community for an easy stop over as to fulfill their daily prayers with comfortably welcomed moment of enlightening.

It's vulnerably for a  'Private Funeral Administrator or Director' to be close associated with the committee of the mosques as it will definitely improves your relationship. Remember, that mosque is based on local and the Islamic laws, in gaining their respect one must try being a little caution as not to interfere deep into their internal committal affair as it will jeopardy your present and the future relationship.Unless you are officially been appointed as their advisory funeral consultant on certain subjective issues though the Imam may not be relevant but the committee is.

PENGURUSAN DAN PENTADBIRAN JENAZAH - Kenderaan Jenazah(Mobile Hearse).

Theres countless of Mosques available in Malaysia, as a Moslem country the township of Sungai Petani, Kedah alone has 15 mosques spreading within several kilometer apart of each 'Qariah' or area. The mosques were newly built or either refurbished and some with additional facilities added. Mosques having an in house funeral service facilities such as body wash, shrouding, and the provision of mobile hearses are called a 'funeral operating base' or 'Base'. To the 'non funeral operating base' or the 'Non Base', their funeral services are offered only to the prevailing undertakers available within the township.

As a blog reader, an undertaker or director with the information above considered very important knowing each mosque capability and its location, the Imam and the mosque committee, perhaps that you will one day be called for an assistant or for future prevailing funeral assignment. In other words...work smart and be honest, maintain a good interpersonal relationship with them and always remember a 'Base' can become a 'Non Base' any time, as people do come and go as they please, and theres a plenty of chances for the vacuum to be filled up by anyone especially for both experienced undertaker and director alike.

FUNERAL MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION - The Islamic Funeral Home.

Five decades ago the Ibrahim Mosque was partly
an Islamic funeral home center.

As an Islamic funeral director, running the entire Islamic funeral home is of  no easy task. Theres are areas of which one must carefully considered and planned before setting up these funeral homes.  Moslem community's adaptation to both Islamic and non Islamic laws and belief must be clearly understood. Funeral home choice of location, self and community exposure, inventory requirement, and the prevailing capital and fund in order to be sustainable and the most seeking flax for the establishment of an organisation followed basically based on these 5 factors below:
  1. The Base - Privately owned, rental or leased building.
  2. Personnel - employed trained staff, grave diggers and experience mortician.
  3. Inventory - provision and maintenance of mobile hearse, morgue freezer, coffin and etc.
  4. Charity and funds - obtainable through donation and other sources.
  5. The Overheads - on electricity, water usage, and other maintenances.
Organisation originally fabricated in the west and the Malaysian funeral home which is also based  upon the above 5 factors. But changes has been made by altering some of these factors which can be helpful as to reduce the burden of the 'Islamic Funeral Directors', and with a carefully revamped some of the contents in the factors and therefore now already found suitably tailored into the Malaysian Islamic funeral need and requirement as shown below:
  1. The Base - privately owned building and either operating direct from the mosque.
  2. Personnel - volunteered staff, sub contracted grave diggers, and mortician.
  3. Inventory - sub contracted mobile hearse and coffin(optional).
  4. Charity and funds - unchanged.
  5. The Overheads - tremendously reduced by offsetting from fund growth and donation.
Based on the above revamped factors, I now operates as a non profitable 'Islamic Funeral Director' in my hometown and also serving as a mortician, Imam for the funeral prayer, reading the 'Talqin', consultant and lectures on the new concept of Islamic funeral management and administration since 2001 with a freedom of moving from one district to another upon request. Its a very challenging job, and with all the hard trying customarily within a country's law and regulation that permits, I suggests one should follow this modus operandi with a vision of successful and correctly leaping forward...with the blessing from ALLAH...Insha Allah.

FUNERAL MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION - The Moslem grave diggers.

Mr.Adnan Bin Ahmad(left) and Mr.Ariff Bin Ali(right).
The grave diggers at work site of a Moslem traditional grave.

Our grave diggers are in their early thirties with their health superbly maintained and they were all-weather workers, rain or shine, day or night and the job has to be completed on specific time requested by the undertakers. As a funeral undertaker, director or administrator you are advised to know them well and with closely associated monitoring as it will make your funeral administrative systematically as scheduled.

An adult traditional grave will be fully dug and ready within 1.5 hours and the cost of each grave is only at RM220.00 and it varies from one state to another. For a 'traditional grave', grave diggers are required to dig a complete grave and whilst the 'systematic grave' less work force used as it being replaced by modern driven tractors.

FUNERAL MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION - Malay traditional coffin maker.

Drizzling has stopped as I arrived at the Majidee Mosque to visit
Hj Kamal Bin Harun (The Malay traditional coffin maker).

The morning of September 26, 2011 at time 10:30, I personally phoned my friend who is a custom built Malay traditional coffin maker as I wanted to pay him a visit to his workshop which situated close to the Majidee Mosque about five kilometers away. He gave me a thumb's up and about 15 minutes later I was already at his front door. Replying to my 'Salam' he then welcomed me, and his name is Hj.Kamal Bin Harun and we were old time friends and he has undertakes most of my client's coffin ordering, and today in our early sixties and with only one common interest...the Islamic Funeral Undertaking.

Hj.Kamal Bin Harun(Malay Traditional Coffin Maker) and Self(The Islamic Undertaker).

In Malaysia, the custom built Malay traditional coffin making was handed down from generation to the next and today it is still popular in demand by Moslem customers. Coffin made from wood beam and plywood with cloth fitted at its base, and it is light and affordable.

Hj.Kamal Bin Harun at the work bench with his custom built Malay traditional coffins stacked behind.

PENGURUSAN DAN PENTADBIRAN JENAZAH - Tempat-Tempat Mandi Mayat Di Malaysia.

  1. Perancangan(Planning),
  2. Pengorganisasian(Organizing),
  3. Pengarahan(Directing),
  4. Penggawalan dan pemantauan(Controlling and Coordinating).

PENGURUSAN DAN PENTADBIRAN JENAZAH - Orang Tengah.

Al Quran-Surah Al Hujuraat(Kamar-Kamar) Ayat: 18.
yang bermaksud:

Sesungguhnya Allah mengetahui apa yang
ghaib di langit dan di bumi. Dan Allah
Maha Melihat apa yang kamu kerjakan.

Hj Mohd Ismail Bin Mohd Hashim

Insha Allah.

Wassallam.
